El Eixample Itinerary

El Eixample, also called "Enlargement" is the central area of Barcelona city, formed by a grid layout of streets with diamond-shaped intersections. The walk begins at the Plaša de Catalunya. Through the Passeig de GrÓcia, between the Plaša de Catalunya and the street of Gran Via de les Cortes Catalanes, we can see some characteristic neogothic structures. There are three notable buildings before getting the Gran Via, on the street of Casp exactly those are the TÝvoli Theater, now a cinema, the Casal de Sant Jordi, the work of Francesc Folguera, and last of all, the Casa Calvet by Antoni GaudÝ.

There are two singular buildings at the intersection of the Passeig de GrÓcia and the Gran Via, On the left of the Passeig de GrÓcia, we see the former Palau Marcet, now a cinema, and on the right, JoyerÝa Roca designed by Josep LluÝs Sert.

Returning to Passeig de GrÓcia, we encounter the famous Manšana de la Disc˛rdia, (apple of discord) named that way because of the contrasting architecture of three of its buildings. The Casa Lleˇ Morera of Lluýs omŔnech I Montaner, with its modernist floral fašade; the Casa Amatller, a few steps up, a neogothic zuilding built by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and decorated with polychrome ceramic on the fašade; and finally the Casa Batllˇ of Antoni GaudÝ. A few yards further down the street of C. Aragˇ is the iron and brick building by DomŔnech i Montaner housing the Antoni TÓpies Foundation .

In the intersection of Passeig de GrÓcia and C. Provenša is the Casa MilÓ. known also as La Pedrera (The Stone Quarry), which is an authentic abstract sculpture where the curve prevails. It is presently the site of the Caixa de Catalunya Foundation. The two courtyards can be visited, in addittion to the roof with its fantastic array of chimneys and ventilators.

At the corner of Av. Diagonal and Rambla de Catalunya is Casa Serra by Puig I Cadafalch, walking along Av. Diagonal and turning right you get Casa Comalat and opposite it, the small Palau Barˇ de Quadras by Puig i Cadafalch. After turning right at C. Roger de Ll˙rica and crossing C. Mallorca we find Palau Montaner, the work of DomŔnech i Montaner. On C. Mallorca, between C. Roger de Ll˙ria and C. Bruc,is Casa Thomas. At the intersection of C. Roger de Ll˙ria and C. Aragˇ we can view the 12th century Gothic Church of La Concepciˇ, transferred between 1871 and 1888 to its present site. Next to it is La Concepciˇ market.

From C. Aragˇ walk along C. Bruc, at the intersection with C. ValŔncia is the noucentist Conservatori Municipal de M˙sica (Municipal Conservatory of Music) designed by Antoni Falguera. On C. ValŔncia at the corner of Passeig Sant Joan, we see the Church of Las Salesas, a neogothic creation which brought about the renewed use of polychrome ceramics. On Passeig de Sant Joan, we can also find the Palau Macaya, by Puig i Cadafalch, seat of the "La Caixa" Foundation, and either C. Provenša or C.
